The RCA Holiday Potluck dinner is one week from tomorrow (Monday, December 18th). This year’s event is going to be different from those of previous years in several important respects. So please read this message carefully if you’re thinking about attending. Also, a preview of January’s meeting is at the bottom of this message. It will be a fun event as well and you might want to take a peek.

This is a member only event. Become an RCA member today!

The potluck starts at 6:30, which is an hour earlier than our other meetings. This year’s event will be held in Theory, which is the OMSI cafe. Directions to Theory are below. You’ll need to tell someone at the main entrance that you’re with RCA to gain access. We’ll be sharing the museum with Family Night and the museum will be busy.

Holding our event in Theory imposes some restrictions. We won’t have access to power. So you won’t have an opportunity to warm or cook your dish at the museum. We also need to clean up after ourselves a bit more thoroughly than usual. So please consider staying to help out at the end of the event.

We’ll have a brief program consisting of some awards and acknowledgements. Then Jim Todd will be generously providing us with a showing of the planetarium laser show Holiday Magic after dinner.  (Thank you, Jim!)

We’ll be collecting images for a slide show featuring club-related activities from the past year. If you’d like to contribute images, please send them to our Calendar Director.

As usual, there will be no club services except for a brief period of calendar sales. However, we will be collecting non-perishable food to donate to SnowCap Community Charities and winter clothes to donate to Transition Projects.

It has been a great year for the club.  Please come help us celebrate it.

The Main Event and Dish Assignments

The club will be providing drinks, plates, cups, and utensils as well as a small amount of food intended to supplement what everyone brings.  The following table shows the dishes we're asking you to bring based on the first letter of your last name.

A through E:      Side Dish
F through K:          Desert
L through Z:      Main Dish

Directions to Theory

Theory is on the ground floor of the museum at the end adjacent to the Tillicum Bridge. To get there, enter the museum at the main entrance, go through the turnstiles next to the admissions desk, and walk to the end of the hallway, past the gift shop and the main exhibition hall.  If you feel uncertain about where you're going, just ask any OMSI employee or follow other people you see carrying containers of food.

January's General Meeting

In January, our friendly local professional theoretical cosmologist, Dr Ethan Siegel, will be talking about his new book Treknology. Treknology is an equation-free scientific exploration of the technologies of all things Star Trek. It is a beautifully constructed 216 pages of hard-cover Trekkie fun. Dr Siegel is also an official reviewer of the new Star Trek series Star Trek: Discovery, which has been streaming on CBS All Access, as well as the author of the highly-acclaimed blog "Starts With A Bang."
