Gopal K. Goel, 13, Silver Medalist, USA Physics Olympiads

We are fortunate to have in our membership Gopal Goel, who at the age of thirteen (thirteen!) placed among the silver medalists this year in the USA Physics Olympiad, a national competition open by invitation to the best and brightest high school and junior high school students in physics. About five thousand students participate in an initial test, called the f=ma test (which is of course Newton’s Second Law of Motion, but we knew that didn’t we?) Of the five thousand who take the first test, four hundred move on to the next level of testing, and among those four hundred, thirty earn gold medals and sixty earn silver medals...

Which is what Gopal did. So he scored among the top one hundred students in the U.S. who took this test. The top gold medalists at this level go on to even harder trials and then five winners get a chance to compete internationally. Since Gopal is only thirteen, he can compete again for several more years and I hope that someday we can bid him godspeed as we put him on an airplane to represent the U.S. in an international competition. In the meantime, warmest congratulations to one bright kid, and we are so glad you are an RCA member! You make us look good!
