We have a busy July coming up. First, Welcome Leo Cavagnaro from Argentina, past president and founding member of our sister club GAMA (Grupo de Astrónomos Mendocinos Aficionados) who is arriving today, July 1, to spend the next three months with his friends in the U.S. and Portland. He’ll be joined later by our good friend Carlos Guttierez and the current president of GAMA, Elias Juri. They will all be at the Oregon Star Party and several RCA events. Leo will post announcements regarding their stay on the Forum. Please watch for them and give them a warm Oregon greeting when you see them.
July offers two special observing events on our calendar. One is the second annual Starry Night at Maryhill Museum (July 15/16), an excellent volunteer opportunity. See Mike McKeag’s article on this primo event in this Gazette. The other is the annual Trout Lake Star Party (July 21-23) at the Flat Top Sno Park on Forest Road 88 outside of Trout Lake. Trout Lake Star Party has become a popular annual event with us, partly because it’s blueberry season up there and we can get blueberry pie at a local café. The parking lot is flat, there’s enough room for forty parties or so, and there’s a (primitive) bathroom on site. Quite often friends from other clubs join us up there, so if you haven’t been, consider making this your debut year for Trout Lake.
2018 will be RCA’s 30th Anniversary. More on that later, but just a heads up: don’t throw away any memorabilia or photographs. We’ll be asking for them!
Have a wonderfully astronomical July, everyone. And make your Eclipse plans now! The moment has arrived — time to decide and commit. See you all on the observing field. Margaret
