In astronomy, people often ask questions like “how bright” or “how far” or “how old” when talking about stars and other deep sky objects. Today it is possible for amateur astronomers to find answers to these questions from observations using modest equipment. Amateurs can do real backyard science from detection of exoplanets to estimating the age of star clusters and more. Note: Jerry Oltion’s lecture on Unusual Telescopes has been postponed.

For several months now, members have been asking when we are going to take another trip to LIGO*, especially since we found such a great camp ground nearby when we went last year. Good news! We’ve set the date for Saturday, October 13. It’s going to be a great trip, but we’re going simple this time. Registration will open on August 20 and close on October 1.
