RCA General Meeting - Solar Eclipse Viewing

  • OMSI 1945 SE Water Avenue Portland, OR, 97214 (map)

Jim Todd, Director of Space Science Education at OMSI

On August 21, 2017, millions of people across the United States will see nature's most wondrous spectacle - a total eclipse of the Sun. It is a scene of unimaginable beauty; the Moon completely blocks the Sun, daytime becomes a deep twilight, and the Sun's corona shimmers in the darkened sky. This is concept outline to understand, prepare for, and view this rare celestial event.

OMSI and the Salem Fairgrounds will partner to host a solar eclipse viewing party. On Monday, August 21, 2017, at 10:18am Salem, Oregon will experience a full minute and fifty seconds of totality. To celebrate this unique experience we will host a viewing party complete with science lectures, astronomy related community groups, entertainment and more.

Jim Todd is Director of Space Science Education the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI). He manages OMSI's Kendall Planetarium, which includes many hats:  programming in astronomy and space exploration; teacher training in astronomy and space education; coordinating OMSI hosting of star parties in conjunction with local amateur astronomy groups; and Co-Director of the Oregon Star Party.  Jim will also coordinate the 2017 solar eclipse viewing from Salem Fairgrounds on August 21, 2017.
