Timeline for Spring LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) Trip

Sorry, tours are all full and registration is now closed. If you wish to cancel, please contact president@rosecityastronomers.org.

The trip has been set for Memorial Day Weekend, May 26 – 28, 2017. We have had very good reception from all parties we are working with in the TriCities area. I expect this to be a very good weekend. This trip will include a private tour of LIGO, a a joint star party and eclipse imaging trials with Tri-Cities Astronomy Club, and may also include a tour of Hanford's historic B Reactor of Manhattan Project fame. Below is a proposed agenda as it now stands, though there may be changes, as planning is still in process.

Friday evening

Around 5 or 6 p.m., we will have a picnic on the grassy area of Horn Rapids Campground with Tri-Cities Astronomy Club (TCAS), combined with Eclipse Imaging Field Trials. Members from both clubs who want to practice setting up and imaging for the eclipse can get some practice and exchange on-site learning and mentoring. Sunset is at 8:36 p.m. and twilight ends at 9:13 p.m. It’s a new moon.

Saturday afternoon

We are working on a private tour of the historic Hanford B Reactor of Manhattan Project fame. There are several factors involved in getting this tour, but we believe we can do it. We will have to thank the TCAS volunteers who make this possible.

Saturday night

Joint star party with TCAS and LIGO employees on the LIGO parking lot and visitor center grounds.

Sunday afternoon:

Private tour of LIGO.

We will not caravan up there. Each party will make its own arrangements for getting there, but if you need a ride, please let Margaret McCrea know.

We have reserved 16 RV and tent spaces for our party at the Horn Rapids County Park Campground, which is five straight miles down the road from LIGO. THERE IS NO REQUIREMENT TO STAY IN THE CAMPGROUND. IF YOU WISH TO STAY IN A LOCAL MOTEL, PLEASE MAKE YOUR OWN RESERVATION. Note all tours are now full.

The cost is $25/night for an RV space, and $15/night for a tent space, which can have two tents on it. Pay here.

If you wish to arrive on an earlier day or stay longer, make those arrangements directly with the park. NOTE: Horn Rapid RV Resort is not the same as the county park and campground. Do not send money to the campground.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, contact Margaret McCrea at president@rosecityastronomers.org.
